Cheshire West and Chester Council began an extensive clean-up today, Monday, 16 November 2009, on the front of the Floatel hotel site and around the disused cinema.

British Waterways, which is responsible for the Floatel Hotel, is in the process of taking the building down and Cheshire West and Chester Council is working alongside it to ensure that the site does not become a grot spot.

The Council's NEAT (Neighbourhood Environment Action Team) will be carrying out the work, which will include clearing away litter and weeds at the front of the Floatel Hotel and around the disused cinema building.

Cllr Keith Musgrave, said: "This is an important environmental project for Northwich. Demolishing the Floatel will take away an eyesore and by undertaking this tidying up exercise it means the river frontage will be opened up for people to enjoy."

The two vacant buildings - Floatel Hotel and cinema - sitting next to each other have provided a place for youths to congregate, which has resulted in compaints of antisocial behaviour.

Cllr Lynn Riley, Area and Community Portfolio Holder, said; "It is important that we work with local residents to address this antisocial behaviour. To begin with we have arranged for our community safety team to be at the site on Monday.

"The team will bring the CCTV van so we can show how we will be monitoring the site and they will be chatting with local residents to discuss concerns and to provide important contact information. We will then continue to have a presence in this area to support residents and ensure the antisocial behaviour does not return."

Local ward members are delighted with the work being undertaken. They see this project as being an important step foreward. Cllr George Miller, said; "In the coming weeks grot spots thoughout the town will be targeted to improve the overall image of Northwich."
